Not too often am I completely blown away by something online, but LastGraph has done just that. LastGraph pulls listening data from Last.fm in order to render your listening timelines in beautiful, computer-killing, hi-res images (PDF and SVG). The site is getting pounded right now as lifehacker (and I am assuming digg/reddit won’t be far behind) has sent a boatload their way (not to mention the high amount of processing power each visualization much take, yeeeouch). Kudos to author Andrew Godwin for his beautiful site and service.

My renderings (PDF) for the last 4 years, are included below. Brings back warm and fuzzy memories! (Ahhhh the first time I listened to Four Year Strong).

Got this track stuck in my head…and when I started doing triplets and stutter edits with my volume knob I realized this track would be incredibly fun to remix. And so I did. Finished in about 4 hrs, awesome! Enjoy the minimal/maximal weirdness, I had fun with this one. Note the download link too!

iota, my new linux htpc

After several weeks of tinkering I am proud to report that Iota, my new home theater pc is up and running. Although it did take considerable effort to make all the options fully functional, I am thoroughly impressed with the performance and capabilities of my system. For those unfamiliar with the topic, a HTPC is a computer whose entire function is designed around home entertainment. At its core, my system is running Ubuntu, a free Debian based Linux OS. The entertainment functionality is powered by a open-source PVR project known as MythTV. In addition to TiVo-like functions (I can record TV, pause, rewind, etc.), it also provides the framework for other plugins that allow web browsing, classic video game emulation and more. One of my favorite plugins I have gotten to work is MythExport, which encodes recently recorded TV shows into iPhone friendly format. Even cooler is that it publishes it to the web (iota is also a general LAMP server), so I can subscribe to my rss via iTunes, or ’stream’ from the road anywhere.
